The Adventist Health System board of directors has appointed Terry Shaw as the organization's president and CEO. Shaw takes the leadership positions immediately, the board announced.

Adventist Health is headquartered in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with hospital campuses spread across 10 states. The health system also includes urgent care centers, home health and hospice agencies, physician practices and skilled nursing facilities.

"It is a tremendous honor and responsibility to be chosen to lead this organization," Shaw said in a statement. "I look forward to building on the successful foundation that has been laid."

Shaw succeeds Don Jernigan, who retired as Adventist Health System's president and CEO on Dec. 8. Jernigan led Adventist for more than 10 years. He will transition to a faculty role at the Adventist Health System Leadership Institute.

Before he was named CEO, Shaw served as executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief operations officer.

Board members credit Shaw with a broad understanding and knowledge of healthcare finance, IT and overall operations, skills they say enabled him to play a pivotal role in defining the organization's vision and direction.
